A Career Built on Transformation

My professional journey has been one of continuous growth, resilience, and transformation across both the hospitality industry and the higher education sector. Today, I serve as the Assistant Vice-President (Academic) at the Nanyang Institute of Management, where I provide institutional leadership in academic governance, quality assurance, programme development, and strategic academic planning across multiple disciplines and levels of education. In addition to this leadership role, I also hold academic appointments with international universities, including the University of the West of Scotland, Abertay University, and Canterbury Christ Church University.

My career did not begin in academia. I started in the hospitality industry, serving in operational and leadership roles with internationally recognised organisations such as Conrad Hotels & Resorts, Marina Bay Sands, and Resorts World Sentosa. Those formative years taught me the importance of service excellence, operational discipline, leadership under pressure, and people management. Over time, I realised that my passion extended beyond operations; I wanted to contribute to the development of future professionals, institutional systems, and educational quality.

“The DBA at SSBM Geneva equipped me with the strategic, research, and leadership capabilities to lead academic transformation with greater confidence and impact.”

This transition into higher education was both challenging and rewarding. I progressively advanced from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, Assistant Dean, Dean, and eventually Assistant Vice-President within the academic sector. Along the way, I became deeply involved in academic governance, curriculum design, programme validation, institutional audits, quality assurance, and transnational education partnerships. The journey demanded not only professional experience, but also a stronger theoretical foundation, strategic thinking capability, and the ability to engage critically with complex organisational and educational challenges.

The Impact of the SSBM Geneva DBA

Pursuing the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) with the Swiss School of Business and Management became a significant turning point in my professional development. The DBA programme strengthened my ability to think strategically, critically evaluate institutional systems, and lead academic transformation initiatives with greater confidence and depth. It equipped me with advanced research, analytical, and leadership competencies that directly enhanced my effectiveness in senior academic leadership roles.

More importantly, the DBA journey taught me the value of intellectual discipline, perseverance, and lifelong learning. Balancing doctoral studies alongside demanding leadership responsibilities was not easy. There were moments of pressure, self-doubt, and sacrifice, particularly while managing institutional responsibilities, leading academic projects, and navigating the evolving challenges within higher education. However, the experience ultimately reinforced my belief that meaningful growth occurs when individuals are willing to step outside their comfort zones and continuously challenge themselves.

Applying DBA Knowledge in Professional Practice

Since graduating, the DBA has positively influenced both my career progression and professional credibility. It has enabled me to contribute more meaningfully to institutional strategy, academic governance, quality enhancement, and international academic collaborations. It also strengthened my confidence when engaging with senior academic leaders, university partners, regulators, and external stakeholders across different educational systems.

A Message to Future Doctoral Candidates

To the SSBM community and future doctoral candidates, I would say that a DBA is far more than an academic qualification. It is a transformational journey that shapes the way you think, lead, analyse, and contribute to organisations and society. Success is not defined solely by titles or achievements, but by the impact we create, the people we influence positively, and the standards we uphold throughout our professional journey.

I remain grateful to SSBM Geneva for being part of my academic and professional development journey. The experience has empowered me to continue contributing towards the advancement of higher education, academic quality, and leadership excellence in an increasingly complex and evolving global environment.
